Persistence has always been a pain when developping applications. When you like the object way of programming, it's great to deal with persistence in the OO way. Using the DAO pattern makes it really a charm. For the implementation, use an Object Relational Mapping like Hibernate. I was really happy discovering fantastic tool. There are other ones but I did not test them yet.
